Shipyard Bijlsma was commissioned to build the Coastal Crown, the most sustainable and fuel-saving workboat currently on the market. The hybrid design of this ship results in 73% nitrogen savings and contributes to a 20% reduction in fuel and CO2 emissions. The battery-hybrid Multicat 3712 will be deployed for multiple activities that involves various idle intervals on a day. To address this need and allow for a smart configuration and usage of power and propulsion systems, the Coastal Crown is equipped with three drive modes: a direct, diesel-electric and battery-electric drive mode. The direct drive mode consists of two direct drive engines on fixed propellers. The diesel-electric drive mode is equipped with two generators with diesel-electrical drive for an azimuth stern and two bow thrusters.

Tier-3 engines are deployed for the propulsion of the ship in order to alter between short high speeds and long idle times. The ship is equipped with a 300-kWh batter pack that allows for battery-electric operation of back-up power and the ship’s accommodation supply. The battery capacity is modular and may be increased when required.

The construction of this sustainable vessel is a follow-up of vessels that we have built previously for Acta Marine. The good cooperation between the contractor and Shipyard Bijlsma has led to the design and construction of a ship that belongs to the highest standard within the industry.
